- BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: Trained in medicine at the University of Aberdeen, Dr. Newcombe worked with the physically and mentally ill in England and Hood River, Oregon, before permanently settling with his family in Victoria, BC. Following the birth of their sixth child in 1891, his wife Marian died. Dr. Newcombe returned to England with half his brood, engaged in geological and natural history studies at the University of London and the British Museum, then returned to Victoria. Following a brief practice at the Insane Asylum in New Westminster, Dr. Newcombe turned to collecting specimens of Northwest Coast First Nations artifacts on behalf of various museums. As part of his expeditions he took and acquired many photographs, including those by Richard Maynard and fellow amateur ethnologist George T. Emmons.
He was on a collecting expedition in 1897 to Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands) for G. M. Dawson and Franz Boas.
