    • BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: An American citizen, according to the Web site Cabinet Card Photographers, he moved from Delaware County, OH, around 1864 to Venezula to work as a photographer. He then obtained passage about 1866 on British ships and worked as a photographer and sketch artist for 16 months. He returned to Ohio around 1868.
The verso of two carte de visite portraits of Mrs. T.S. Dobbin (nee Dorothea McKenzie) at the BC Archives identified this man as a photographer aboard HMS Zealous which was based in Esquimalt during the mid to late 1860s. As a civilian he was not listed in the 1869 Navy List for this vessel.
According to Wikipedia HMS Zealous arrived in Esquimalt in "July 1867...; she remained moored there, at the end of a telegraph link with Britain, until April 1869. During this time her only sea service was for gunnery practice on two days every quarter. In January 1870 she picked up a fresh crew at Panama brought out by the two-decker HMS Revenge. After six years on station she was relieved by Revenge as flagship and started for home. ... She was refitted in Plymouth in April 1873...."
In June 1870 the Zealous sailed to the Fraser River to have barnacles removed from her hull, an undertaking which provided a business opportunity as a tourist attraction (Colonist, 25 Jun 1870, p. 3). The Zealous left the river in the company of HMS Boxer for Victoria on 29 June 1870 (Colonist, 28 Jun 1870, p. 3).
    • IDENTIFYING MARKS: "Bodurtha, Photographer, H.M. Ship 'Zealous'" on verso of cartes-de-visite. Field photographs surface may be marked "Bodurtha Photo" (UBC, Uno Langmann Family Collection of British Columbia Photographs, [Jock Taylor's Travels]).
