    This notice provoked a sardonic reply from one of Nanaimo's resident photographers, W.P. Coughlan in the 4 Aug 1888 issue under the title "Oh, Photographic, Is It?"

    • STATUS: Studio (itinerant).
    • BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: Operated by T.J. Fletcher in Nanaimo and by R.H. Gardiner in Victoria, the company turned up in Vancouver and moved on to Nanaimo on 25 Jul 1888 where Fletcher exchanged letters to the newspaper with local photographer W.P. Coughlan. The company then transferred to Victoria in late Aug and remained there for a month or so. Gardiner subsequently returned to Victoria in Nov 1888 to honour orders placed just prior to his company's move from Victoria to Puget Sound.
    • IDENTIFYING MARKS: Landscape views (approx. 8 x 10 in.) taken in Vancouver bear a number on the print surface ranging from at least "96/C" to at least "142/C"; the front of the print mount may be marked "The Great Eastern Photographic and Advertising Company." "Great Eastern Photo and Advertising Co." on front of cabinet portrait (BVICA). "Great Eastern Photo. & Advertising Co. R. H. Gardiner, Manager, 285 Goldsmith St., East Side, Portland, Oregon" on front of print mount (ORHS).
