    • BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: During the South African War, Fortey enlisted in Lord Strathcona's Horse on 12 Feb 1900 in Calgary, AB. He gave his birthplace as Dum Dum, India and occupation as cowboy; in his attestation paper his occupation was rancher. He was sent back to England on a medical discharge on 25 Jan 1901. He made his way to Canada and by Apr 1901 was living in Windermere, BC when the census was taken. A document in his South African War personnel file confirms his presence in Windermere in 1901. He returned to fight in South Africa and was wounded in 1902 (Canterbury, BC, The Outcrop, 17 Apr 1902, p. 1).
      He was listed as a photographer in the 1901 Canada census.
      Fortey eventually moved to Ottawa where he married and resided for most of his life.
