    • STATUS: Stereo publisher.
    • BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: William Herman Rau (1855-1920) was himself a photographer and also a major figure in the publication of stereo views. He published under his own name, as well as under the name Universal View Company. His stereographs were sold by both the Universal View Company and other firms such as Griffith and Griffith. It is not known if he ever visited British Columbia as a photographer.
      According to Treadwell and Darrah (1994b), Rau's business was acquired by Underwood and Underwood in the 1890s.
