  • Notes
    • STATUS: Commercial.
    • BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: Listed as "photographer (C.P.R.)" in the 1887 directory, Macmunn's work was among the best produced by several commercial photographers who travelled along the line. The T. N. Hibben & Co. bookstore sold his work as early as 1883 which it described as "Macmunn's Views of Canadian Pacific Railway, Victoria and Surroundings." His name has been variously spelled as "McMunn," "MacMunn," and "McMann." The BVIPA album is an exquisite but incomplete example of his work. Another example of his work in album form is held by ABA. Cambridge University Library, Eng. holds two albums of his work and an uncredited album is also preserved by the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, CA. For other albums and print collections see the list of Sources and Boulet and Mattison (2015).
Charles was survived by his wife Margaret (d. 4 Jun 1912, Victoria, BC, age 77), a dressmaker, when he died at the age of 63. On 15 Jul 1903 (p. 6) she advertised his photographic stock and negatives for sale in the Vancouver Daily World.
    • IDENTIFYING MARKS: "Charles Macmunn's Views of the Canadian Pacific Railway..." on verso of print. Some prints bear a white, handwritten number in the lower left or lower right corner. The numbered prints range between 3 and 421.
