    • BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: He operated a Japanese and fancy goods store in the Arcade building at 211 West Hastings St. and practiced photography. The 1901 Canada census gives his occupation as merchant and notes that he immigrated in 1891. In Jan 1903 he made a three-day visit to Seattle, WA, possibly to purchase merchandise for his store. The U.S. immigration card notes an arrival in Canada of Dec 1900 on the Empress of China. He was also listed in the 1901 and 1902 business directories as operating a boarding house at his own former residence at 207 East Hastings St., having by then relocated his home to 129 Robson St. He was also listed, though not with a first name or initial, as operating a boarding house in the 1895 business directory. He was one of the first directors of the Vancouver Japanese Club which incorporated in Nov 1902. A person with the same names is listed in the Boston, MA, directories between 1905-1908 and working as a clerk.
The City of Vancouver Archives prints date to 1901 and some depict a street fair and carnival that year as well as the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York on 30 Sep 1901.
The Nikkei National Museum in Vancouver preserves a 1928 group portrait montage of Issei pioneer individuals, one of whom is identified as Nakazo Hamamura (URL accessed 6 Aug 2021: https://www.nikkeimuseum.org/www/item_detail.php?art_id=A5138).
