    • STATUS: Commercial.
    • BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: He appears to have begun his career working with Harry James, possibly in 1908. The partnership of James and McCarthy was listed only for 1909 and 1910. James also resided at 921 Pacific St. from 1909 to 1915. By 1914 McCarthy was employed as a motorman with the BC Electric Railway.
      During World War One he travelled to Australia and joined the Australia Imperial Force on 9 Feb 1916. There was another individual of the exact same name, but of a younger age, who also joined up. He served in France, was returned to Australia after being hospitalized in England, and discharged due to medical unfitness on 23 Oct 1918.
      According to a passenger list, he returned via Auckland, NZ, to Vancouver, BC, on 3 Jun 1919 on the ship Makura.
      On his 1938 marriage registration record he gave his occupation as a photographer.
      He was last listed as a photographer in the 1943 business directory, then reemerged in the 1950-1951 Victoria directory as the proprietor of the Cherer Photo Studio.
      On his death registration record his occupation is recorded as "retired photographer".
      According to his gravestone, he was a private in the Australian "forces".
