By 1891 they had moved to Emerson, MB, where his father (John J.) worked as a photographer according to the 1891 Canada census. According to the 1901 Canada census, at the age of 22 Roy was working as a photographer with his father, listed as James J. and also still a photographer, in Emerson, MB. Roy eventually settled on the west coast and worked in Vancouver and Powell River as a photogapher in the late 1910s to at least the mid-1930s.
