    • STATUS: Commercial.
    • BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: Public records give his occupation as a miner. His probate file, administered by his widow, Mary Jane Gilbert, makes no mention of the photo studio. A week after his death she advertised the studio for rent, calling it "well established" and "fitted up with all the latest improvements. The Gallery is 50x14 feet, with a large room in front suitable for a store or waiting room." The studio was leased by W.H. Davis who took possession in early Jun 1877.
J.K. Gilbert was a member of the Ancient Order of Forestry, Court Nanaimo Foresters' Home, and the Good Templars Onward Lodge. He left behind his widow and three children upon his death at age 42.
