    • BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: After establishing a photo studio in New Westminster around 1885 he moved to Kamloops and opened a studio there the following year. He branched out into groceries and dry goods between 1889 and 1890. The 1889 directory showed him in partnership as Reid and Browne, photographer. In Apr 1891 he moved back to New Westminster and opened the Sunbeam Photo and Art Company Ltd. that Dec. The Vancouver newspaper noted that

An entirely unique department will be stated in connection with the gallery of art, in the shape of a circulating art library, containing the latest press studies in oil and water colors, to be rented for copying.

Browne appears to have remained in New Westminster as a photographer until 1897 or 1898 when he returned to Kamloops and opened a barbershop. The business directory of 1895 showed him in both Kamloops and New Westminster as a barber and photographer respectively.

A J.L. Browne also showed up in Durham, ON, as a photographer in the 1897 business directory. He was listed as photographer in New Westminster in the 1894 and 1898 List of Voters. Browne served as an alderman in Kamloops in 1901, 1902 and 1907.

The 12 May 1891 Canada census shows him employed as a photographer in New Westminster, age 33; his wife was named Barbara and their three sons were William, Ivan R. and Carl.

The 5 Apr 1901 Canada census shows him employed as a photographer in Durham, ON, age 43; his wife is Barbara (b. 9 Sep 1862), but only two of their three sons are listed, William B. (b. 9 Sep 1884) and Carl S. (b. 6 Jun 1890), both born in B.C.
