    • BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: The son of William and Elizabeth Benson, he was christened on 24 Nov 1815 at his birthplace. He arrived in BC in 1849 and served as a physician at various Hudson's Bay Company forts and towns, including Victoria, Nanaimo (1857-1862), and Vancouver, WA. Francis G. Claudet met him at Nanaimo and utilized some of the doctor's equipment to obtain a view of Nanaimo between 11 and 22 Jun 1860. Mount Benson near Nanaimo was named in 1859 after him.

By the time of the 1871 England census he was back living in Yorkshire at Ruswarp, age 55 and widowed; he was living with his sister Dorothy Benson and two female servants, one of whom was 90 years old. [11]
