    • STATUS: Amateur.
    • BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: Dr. A.J. Gillis attended dental college in Philadelphia (graduated 1892) and medical school there (graduated 1894). He travelled to the Yukon Territory in 1898 and prospected for gold. He was married in 1902 in Dawson and their first child, Alexandria Jane Gillis, was born in Dawson in 1916. Among their friends were the famous Yukon poet Robert W. Service, whom Dr. Gillis photographed. The family left Dawson around 1918 and eventually settled in Seattle, Washington. Dr. Gillis was a Freemason with a Dawson lodge and a politician at both the territorial and national levels in the 1910s.
