    The photographs he was to take on the Saanich Inlet were to illustrate a possible route for the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway which was being surveyed at that time.

    He sailed on the Douglas to the head of Bute Inlet where the newspaper noted he would take photographs as part of exploratory work for Canadian Pacific Railway routes.

    • STATUS: Institutional (visits).
    • BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: He first started survey work as a photographer on behalf of the Canadian Pacific Railway in Alberta in 1871 under Frank Moberly. He worked as a survey photographer in BC and published a book in 1874 about his 1872 survey work, which saw him journey from Fort Garry (MB) to the Pacific Ocean via the Peace River, Skeena and Naas Rivers to Fort Simpson (near Prince Rupert and known since 1986 as Lax Kw'alaams). He also issued an album of views around 1874 based on his survey work in 1874. A further album contains photographs taken during his 1875 survey work in BC. Following his return to Victoria, he was reported to be taking photographs along Saaanich Inlet for a proposed railway line. Horetzky lobbied in other publications for his route as the most practical for the CPR to follow.
      Horetzky's negatives were reported lost in the tragic sinking of the Pacific on 4 Nov 1875. They were later recovered and shipped back to Ottawa. A portion of the negatives were acquired by the Topley Studio and are preserved by the Library and Archives Canada. For details of the negatives loss and recovery see Mattison (2023).
