His obituary indicated he had resided in Victoria for 42 years (1896) and was a former sergeant-major in the Fifth Regiment and also held the same rank in "A" Company, Royal Canadian Regiment, special service, from 1900 to 1901. He served in World War One with with the Fifteenth Brigade, C.F.A.
