  • Notes
    • STATUS: Commercial.
    • BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: While the 1921 Canada census places his immigration date as 1911, it also noted that he was working in the United States while living in Royston; his business was running an importing firm. The 1920 United States census stated he had immigrated there in 1918 and was working and living in Portland as a shipping broker.
Sillence's photography in Duncan was first noticed in 1911 following a fire. By 1923 he had moved to Royston where he ran the Royston General Store and served as the town's postmaster. He returned to photography in the early 1930s and beginning with the 1938 business directory, he operated studios in both Courtenay and Royston. While still a resident of Royston, he passed away at one of his daughter's homes in Alberni.
His daughter, Margaret F. (Peggy) Sillence, worked with him as a photographer.
Besides being a talented photographer, he was also a noted local musician and conductor, as well as a bridge player.
