    • BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: While working in Toronto he copyrighted a photograph bearing the influence of the Pictorialist school. According to a 1906 Vancouver World article, he won the "grand prize" in the 1900 Paris world's fair, along with many awards for his photography exhibited in eastern Canada.
In the 1901 Canada census he is working in Toronto as a photographer and at age 25 married to Gertrude [McMillan] (age 23, born 4 Mar 1878). They have a son, Gordon Wilford, age 2, born 11 Dec 1898 (he claimed 11 Mar 1898 on his Canadian Expeditionary Force attestation paper).
In Aug 1900 while in Toronto, he was sued by a young woman over the use of her portrait for advertising by a Toronto drugstore. The case was eventually dismissed.
E.J. Rowley moved to Vancouver around 1906 and his business address was on the north side of Georgia St. at the corner of Howe St., a few doors away from R.H. Trueman's studio.
He was appointed as a photographer by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway and travelled to the railway's terminus at Prince Rupert early in 1907 to take photographs. He had a studio sale of views in Feb 1907.
In Jul 1914 he travelled to San Francisco, CA, and the passenger list noted his occupation as a photographer and that he had last lived in Summerland, BC, where his nearest relative was his father Joseph, a jeweller.
While residing in San Diego, CA, and employed as a photographer he enlisted in the Canadian Expeditonary Force in Jul 1917. He claimed to be unmarried at this time. His name does not appear in the San Diego business directories between 1915 to 1917. [19, 20]
