  • Notes
    • STATUS: Amateur; Commercial.
    • BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: A former musician and an amateur photographer, in 1901 he registered copyright on four stereo photographs, three of which were of the Koksilah River Falls. He marketed these under his own name as part of a series titled "Sea and Land Views of Vancouver Island, B.C." In 1906 he began a transition to a commercial photographer by taking a photography course at the California College of Photography, Palo Alto, CA. He arrived in San Francisco, CA, with his wife on 21 Feb 1906 aboard the Umatilla out of Victoria, BC, and they returned to Victoria via Seattle, WA, on 24 Apr 1906. According to his Victoria Times obituary they were in San Francisco when the 18 Apr 1906 earthquake struck. The Colonist's society page noted that he was travelling to California to further his musical education (11 Feb 1906, p. 11).
In 1910 he purchased the photographic business of Jones and Company and operated under the name George H. Larrigan Studio. His obutary states he had a partnership, prior to owning the former Jones studio, of about six months with Wilfred Gibson. A small notice in the Colonist (3 Feb 1910, p. 6) confirms that connection. Following Larrigan's untimely death in 1914 of appendicitis, in the 1915 business directory the photographer S.B. Taylor occupied 1230 Government St.
The 1901 Canada census states he immigrated in 1895 while the 1911 Canada census gives an immigration date of 1897 or 1899. The latter census also gives his occupation as "artist." [29, 30, 31, 32]
