    • BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: After studying medicine and engineering at Toronto University, Klotz joined the Topographical Surveys Branch, Dominion Dept. of the Interior (1879-1908). He surveyed along the Canadian Pacific Railway line through the mountains to delimit the 10-mile wide Railway Belt land grant. He was the first to determine the heights of principal mountain peaks along the railway and named many of them. Klotz also worked on the Alaska boundary survey in 1893-1894. While in London, England, in 1898 he discovered an important cache of Foreign Office correspondence, much of which pertained to the North American Boundary Commission, some of whose Royal Engineer members were photographers. Klotz was later director of the Dominion Observatory, Ottawa (1917-). A photograph of the Glacier House under construction in 1886 was published in Hart (1983).
