    • STATUS: Government (land surveyor).
    • BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: Educated at the University of Toronto in mining engineering and though he had hoped to mine in the Yukon gold fields, he settled in B.C. where he obtained employment as a land surveyor. He worked under T.S. Gore in the early 1900s, who was also a photographer. Swannell bought his first camera in Apr 1901. Licensed as both a provincial and Dominion land surveyor, he spent the first seven years of his career carrying out a series of important surveys, illustrating his notebooks with photographs, in northern BC. After serving in World War One, he returned to BC and resumed his surveying career, from which he retired in 1932.
