    • STATUS: Commercial; Photo supplies.
    • BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: A son of Richard and Hannah Maynard, he was, like his father, a shoemaker, and took over both his father's photographic supply and shoe store. He operated as a photo supply company under various names, including his own and in partnership as the Maynard and Stewart Photo Supply Company. He was last associated with the business in the 1931 business directory. In a 1932 tribute article about his career, the Colonist newspaper also announced that he had transferred ownership of his photo supply business to his daughter L.E. Maynard. He disposed of all of his parents negatives and the studio register at various dates to the BC Archives.
      As an 11-year-old he accompanied his father by wagon to Barkerville. During the summer of 1868 on this trip, so Albert related late in life, he was a member of a visiting minstrel troupe.
      In 1877, as a 19-year-old, during a strike or work stoppage by coal miners in Wellington near Nanaimo, he was in one of two companies of militia sent from Victoria on the Maude. According to paylists he was a militia member from either 1876 or 1877 to 1879.
      Albert had varied interest: he once worked as a taxidermist for the Provincial Museum, collected guns and was a member of fraternal organizations, including the Rotary Club. He gave many lantern slide shows and talks into the early 1930s based on his mother and father's photographs. [69]
