  STATUS: Amateur. BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: As a United States Navy lieutenant stationed in Alaska between 1882 and the late 1890s (he retired in 1899), he developed an interest in the Indigenous peoples with whom he came into contact. Emmons photographed primarily among the Tahltan and Tlingit peoples of Alaska and BC. Emmons published widely in his lifetime. Some of his writings on the Tlingit peoples was posthumously published and contains examples of his photography.
